Our Brewmaster
Liam McKenna loves beer.
Born in Scotland and trained as a microbiologist at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Liam has worked more than 20 years as a professional brewmaster and beverage consultant in North America and Europe. The beer he made in Dublin, Ireland, between 1996 and 2000 was so good that Guinness paid publicans not to stock it.
Dubbed "the great polemicist of the craft brewing movement" by The Irish Times, McKenna has a brewing philosophy embodying a passion for quality, purity, balance, and taste – four key elements that are reflected in the complex and delicious beers he has created for YellowBelly.
"Canada's Best Brewer"
Liam's many awards include medals at the World Beer Championships, the Stockholm Beer Festival, and the Brewing Industry International Awards. He has been called (among other things) "Canada's Best Brewer" by acclaimed beverage writer Billy Munnelly.
In addition to loving beer, Liam McKenna loves Newfoundland, and being the brewmaster at YellowBelly Brewery & Public House.
